There are several ways to distinguish silicone from rubber:

  1. Appearance: Silicone generally has a more smooth and translucent appearance compared to rubber. Rubber may have a rougher texture and may not be as translucent.

  2. Flexibility: Silicone is often more flexible and can withstand more extreme temperatures and deformations without breaking. Rubber also has flexibility but may not be as resilient in extreme conditions.

  3. Odor: Silicone usually has a very mild or almost no odor. Rubber may have a distinct smell, especially certain types of rubber.

  4. Chemical Resistance: Silicone has excellent chemical resistance and is less likely to be affected by oils, solvents, and chemicals. Rubber may have varying degrees of chemical resistance depending on the type.

  5. Thermal Stability: Silicone can withstand high temperatures without significant degradation. Rubber may soften or melt at relatively lower temperatures.

  6. Burn Test: When burned, silicone may produce a white ash and have a less pungent smell compared to rubber which may produce a black smoke and a stronger odor.
